October 2006
Hello. Did you get the pictures from Courtney? I am new to this research thing. I am curious how do you get the records from England? I know that Courtney's great, great, great grand father John Odams was born in Leicestershire, England. (His son Herbert was Aunt Dora and J. Frederick's brother-in-law.) Our Girl Scout troop trip to Salem this week-end will allow a brief visit to the cemetery. I plan to bring some flowers to Gramy and Grampy Odams. Now that I have been researching the Nichols, and Hussey line I kinda feel like I know them too. Does that happen or is it just me? Anyway I plan to bring something for Ella, apparently she would be your step-great grand mom. :) Have you ever come out here to Salem or Providence? Courtney is researching schools in Providence. We will be there in the next month. I hope to try and find some of the places Dad has been telling us about. Is there anything left of the Baird North Co.? Try to write back. :) Claudia :)

Hello. Courtney has scanned the papers and pictures into the apple. You should get them soon. :) Aunt Dora actually had four sisters. Aunt Dora had two brothers Walter and John. They both served in the Spanish American War with the MA Eighth, company H. They are both listed on this page http://www.spanamwar.com/8thmassroster.htm This page was interesting to me because I noticed the two brothers were listed along with 1st Sgt Edgar J. Whelply. LNO's father-in-law or my husband's great grandfather. When I find the marriage records it will be interesting to see if Dora married J. Frederick before or after Mary Ella married W.G.Hussey. LNO Jr -- Lester Nichols Odems, Jr. -- was very close to Aunt Dora and J. Frederick. I was mistaken about where Aunt Dora and J. Frederick lived. Dad spent his time with them in RI where Dad grew up. At that time they lived at 51 Woodbury St in Providence. I thought they lived in Augusta because that is were they are now buried with Edward P. Hussey. Edward is W.G's brother. My husband, Nick spent all his summers in Augusta with his maternal grandparents. For some reason I thought Dad also spent summers in Augusta. All the newspaper clippings that dad has are about the Whelplys. The clippings came from his maternal grandmother. I did find a Hunter's Certificate of Registration in J Frederick's name. According to it he was 5' 8.5", blue eyes, 130 lbs. His hand writing was extremely neat. :) Dora was dad's great aunt. He only knew of Mary Ella. Have a nice weekend. Claudia :)

Hello. Aunt Janice sent this to me today. I will meet with her in the next month to get some more info. I need to plot all the different lines for myself. It sounds like my husband Nick, LNO 3rd was related to your mom through the Locke's. Sounds like you may also be a descendant of Capt John Locke. :) Sorry I did not get to call back. Talk to you soon. Claudia :)

Hi Claudia - - There was a Betsey Hussey, born in 1808, who married John Stain and had a daughter Betsey P. Stain. Betsey Stain married John F. Locke and had Fred John Locke. They are all Rachel's ancestors. Betsey Hussey was a descendant of Richard Hussey of Dover NH who was taxed there in 1690. I'm attaching a file that tells what I have on John F. and Betsey (Stain) Locke. It's a working document, not meant to be final. I had always assumed that Fred Hussey and his father, Edward, came from the same Hussey line, but I never looked into it. I don't know who Edward's father was, but possibly he was Edgar. Edward, Fred, and Dora Hussey and Rachel Locke are buried in a lot listed as owned by Edgar Hussey. Edgar himself and Lillian are buried in a lot that is listed as owned by Lillian. You can find the lot-owner names in the big cemetery in Augusta on line.

I found Ruth Hussey's web site. It says that she is descended from Christopher Hussey. That is a different Hussey line. It could be that it is Fred and Edward's line, but you'll need to check into that. In any case, whether or not they are related through the Hussey line, Rachel was related to Ruth Hussey because they are both descendants of the Rev. Stephen Bachiler (Batchelder), a remarkable man, founder of the town of Hampton NH.

Bob remembers Fred Hussey's mother, Aunt Lil, quite well. She lived near where the Sears is now in Augusta. Gramie Locke told me once that Fred was quite devoted to his mother. Dora would have liked to travel during their vacations, but Fred always wanted to return to his mother's place in Augusta and spend his two weeks vacation there, and I guess Dora just had to accept it. They loved fine restaurants and sometimes drove miles out of their way to get to one, so at least Dora had that. Good luck with your research. It can be such fun, but very time-consuming. Aunt Janice
